Yesterday I had one of those days where I get excited like a child on Xmas. 1Password got updated — on both OS X and iOS.
Sadly the excitement didn’t last long.
You see, that their encryption deployment is good enough, according to them, to have it stored in a cloud service, but I rather not. You know, that whole thing of rather being safe than sorry, and being control of your own data.
Since they reactivated the WiFi sync feature I’ve used that between my Mac and iDevices.
It has worked fine, until yesterday. It seems they didn’t test their release well enough. I’ve reluctantly had to contact their support — now I’m just waiting for a response.
In the meantime I decided I would try their iTunes file transfer.
But lo and behold, they’ve stuffed that one up too.
Great work guys…
I’m not tempted to use iCloud nor Dropbox. And I don’t care how much they profess that their encryption is safe on Dropbox. I’d rather not have it stored in the cloud.
I was so frustrated that I considered going back to basic using a [blowfish](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blowfish_(cipher) encrypted file using vi -x — but I can’t find any documentation that specifies if it uses 32 bits or up to 448 bits.
But I’ll be patient…
I did head over to their forum and discovered a discussion regarding [PRISM](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PRISM_(surveillance_program) that didn’t impress me one bit.
A staffer at Agilebits writes, “We simply don’t know whether US or non-US are more deeply penetrated. My guess is that non-US ones will be more deeply penetrated than US ones, but that is only my guess,” regarding using non-US cloud services.
I dare say the last sentence shows that statement was not thought through before posted. It’s just a guess.
Guess all you want, but keep it to yourself, unless you have solid evidence that backs your guess up.
The discussion is a festival of excuses by staffers and users.
Encryption is tricky, I get that, but accusing (not a staffer) people of being too paranoid and that if you want full control you should compile your own OS, etc just becomes juvenile and downright pathetic.
With that said, I would love to be able to do that tho, compile my own OS, if that meant I didn’t have to deal with condescending, know-it-all nerds.
But I digress…
Hopefully Agilebits will fix WiFi sync in 1Password with hast. You know, so I can use a product as it is advertised. A product I’ve paid for…
